Ebook About Out of the frying pan and into the fire.Things go from bad to worse for Ben and his crew as they struggle to push on toward Colorado. Unfortunately, due to Emma’s deteriorating health, they’re forced to alter their plans. But a delay might not be their biggest problem.Battling the elements and their own physical limits proves to be almost as treacherous as the roving gangs of highway bandits that lurk in the shadows, looking to prey upon the weak or unprepared. It’s more important than ever to remain vigilant.Especially when being deep in Patriot Hooligan territory makes every stop to fuel the vehicles a potential life and death situation. The murderous gang of extremists leave no question about their intent for anyone unlucky enough to cross their path. Something made clear by the grim remains of their evil deeds that litter the route to Fort Wayne. With no other choice, they must push on toward their new destination for Emma’s sake. But Ben sees Colorado and home slip further from their grasp, along with his expectations of humanity. Even the youngest of the group can no longer be sheltered from the problems this post-apocalyptic world presents or the tough choices that come along with surviving in it.Book Forsaken: A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Survival series (Dark Road Book 10) Review :
This is a great series that goes hand-in-hand w/ the authors “Cloverdale” series. Normally I would slap a 5-star review w/ no questions or comments. I am giving this a 3-star review bc each new addition to the series is painfully short, leaves you w/ a huge cliffhanger & then a really long wait for the next installment. A lot of short reads are okay by me bc as soon as I finish there is a clear indication of when the next book will be out. In most cases w/ other authors & series it is like a month after the release of the previous book. Not these. So many things left hanging out there, so many questions left unanswered & no way to know when you can get that closure. By the time the next book comes out I spend the first 3-4 chapters trying to figure out who the characters & remember what is going on bc it has been so long. If you are going to put out a super short book that ends in a cliffhanger you need to have the next book in the finishing stages w/ a set release date. Maybe just not release a current book until the next is in its final phases? I don’t know, but this kinds of stuff makes me want to just cut my losses & stop following the series. Bruno Miller is one of my favorite writers in the post-apoc EMP survival genre, even if he indulges in decompressed storytelling. Forsaken is the tenth book in his Dark Road series, and only two weeks (almost three weeks) had passed since the EMPs dropped. For Ben Davis, the ex-Army Ranger, he's achieved half his goal. He and his oldest child, Joel, had journeyed from Colorado to Maryland and successfully retrieved his two younger kids. For the past few books, they'd all been trying to get back home to Colorado. In a perfect world, they would've been in and out and back home in Durango already. But that's not the way it works in TEOTWAWKI.The name of the game is "change of plans." From jump, it hadn't been a smooth drive back. From the moonshiners that had held them captive, to run-ins with the terrifying Patriot Hooligans, a gang whose territory seems to encompass Ohio and Indiana, to other random hostile survivors, to still being wary of exposure to radiation poisoning from the nuclear detonation, to concern about their dodgy traveling companion, Martin, to Ben's little girl Emma's foot getting infected - all things that had combined to tweak and divert their travels.Ben had a notion of stopping by Cloverdale for some respite and to check up on their friends there. That plan gets scrapped when the cut on Emma's foot gets severely infected, and Ben instead opts to take their four-vehicle convoy to Fort Wayne where Ben hopes Ruth's doctor daughter can help Emma. If you remember, Ruth is one half of an elderly couple that Ben had rescued from the moonshiners' camp. Ruth and her husband were only supposed to travel partway with Ben before they broke off for Fort Wayne while Ben's family continued on to Cloverdale.Maybe some plot spoilers. It's another great read, but another short read, more novella than novel. But I've yet to read a bad Bruno Miller story. This one features two action sequences but is fraught with tension the entire time. I liked that Ben's family, as well as Allie and her mom, Sandy, are getting experience at surviving on the road and each is becoming more and more capable - especially Joel - although I was shocked at who ended up taking out that armed guy at the gas station. I enjoyed the scenes at Julia and Ed's impressive, tricked-out compound (Julia is Ruth's doctor daughter; Julia's husband Ed is a building contractor/prepper). The third act kicks off with Ben's having to infiltrate a nearby town populated by Patriot Hooligans so as to access Julia's clinic for more antibiotics for Emma. As has been the habit of the past few books, we end with a cliffhanger. This cliffhanger, though, had me going, "What the f---?!" Can't wait for Book 11.
